I was thinking….

An encounter with a neighbor in the garage who said “you always seem happy.” got me thinking about the word. Happiness is an insufficient metric for quality of life because happiness is not inherently virtuous. There are any number of things that you or I can do happily that harm ourselves and our communities. Murder makes a serial killer quite happy.
Instead of measuring our activities, relationships, and vocations through the lens of, “Well, does it make you happy?” instead we could try asking, Does it make you compassionate? Does it make you generous? Does it make you more selfless?
May we seek lives of virtue over happiness.
