Dog Days OF Summer

The Dog Days Of Summer Have Hit With A Vengence Here In The South. Even now at 6:45am the humidity hits you like a wall.

Dog Days of Summer are described as hot sultry summer weather but why are they called Dog Days? It is popularly believed to be an “evil time” when the sea boiled, wine turned sour, dogs grew mad and all creatures became languid causing man burning fevers. Dog Days of Summer actually originate from Sirius the Dog Star the brightest star in the galaxy which rose just before or at about the same time as the sunrise and set with the sun. This usually last anywhere from 30-54 days between early July and early September.

Searching the sky this morning i could not identify the Dog Star, imagebut the elderly woman I see on my morning walk with BBG is collecting a fruit falling from a tree in Piedmont Park a month earlier then usual.  Lets hope with the early appearance of theses Dog Days that it signals and early fall !

  1. “all creatures became languid” – describing myself at work today…it was a hot one up here; currently we are having thunderstorms and it’s supposed to be cooler tomorrow.
